Actually, you can fertilize when your crops are at 99% grown and you will get the double crop. I don't fertilize every three days, but every 5-6.

I think the best use it to plant short term crops during the first two and a half days, then a long term crop. Replant a long term, but don't fertilize until right at the end, then do short term crops again.

And, your workers earn twice as much, as well.
