Chapter 17 - The messaging system

Messages

The envelope icon at the top of your game screen between the Farmers Lists icon and your XP amount for your current Level is where you can read any messages that farmers have sent to you in game.

If there is a number in red on the message envelope that means you have a message you have not read yet.

Messages can not be saved. There is room to show around 50 farmers messages at a time. You can receive more messages than that but it can't show you all of them at once.

The red counter, on the message envelope, will not go above 99 and if you have more unread messages than that, it will just show a + sign on the envelope.
As you read the messages and they get below 99 the counter will start counting up again as new messages come in.

We recommend you read your messages when you get them and don't let them build up as you can only open them one at a time.

To open your messages, click on the envelope and you will see your Inbox. You will see who sent messages and part of the message if the message is a long one.

Example of an Inbox with received messages:

If you are new to playing Farm Town and don't have any messages yet the list will be blank.

Mouseover a message and it will highlight in yellow.

Click on the highlighted message that you want to read to open it.

The opened message will show you some information about the sender, things like:
their message

their avatar name and in brackets their first name

the date and time of the message

a picture of their avatar

their profile picture if they have one

a few details like their level and amount xp earned so far

any coloured dots you see represent things like if they are on line in the game, have active co-operative quests, are your super neighbour. All of the coloured dots are explained in Chapter 05 - Neighbours and Buddies Farmer Lists.

Example of a message:

If you receive a long message that is longer than what can display in the box, there will be a scroll bar to the right you can use to scroll the message to see the rest. In the example below the majority of the sent message has been removed for privacy and the scroll bar is indicated with a red arrow.

If you have a mouse with a wheel you can just use the mouse wheel to scroll the message to see more of it.

If you don't have a mouse with a scroll wheel you can just click on the bar to the right and drag the bar to view more of the message.

The red X top right of the message closes the message box.

Also at the bottom of the message they send to you are some more icons that can be useful.

Show History on any message is sometimes useful if there has been a long time between when a farmer last sent you a message and the new one they sent you. It can show you some what was sent previously, but the it can only show you a small amount. A very long message won't show the whole content of the message. It's there just to give you an idea of what conversation you may have had recently with that farmer.

Read All can be useful if you have not been reading all your messages and have quite few.

If you open any message the Read All will be green when you have a lot of unread messages and you can click on it to mark all messages as read so that the number on the envelope clears.

When there are no unread messages the Read All will be dimmed.

The Green man when clicked on takes you to that farmers farm should you want to go there.

The blue and green Silhouettes are to do with Neighbour and Buddies which are explained in Chapter 05 Requesting Neighbours or Buddies Using a received in game message

The Gift box icon when clicked on will show you the Send Gift section of the Gift Manager as long as you are still able to send them a gift today. If you can not send one at that time you will se a brief message like this:

Note: This is a generic message, it can not show you multiple types to take into account if you own the gifting machines or not so the today part of the notification is not always going to apply to you when you own the gifting machines that allow you to gift numerous times a day.

The red icons to the right of those are to do with blocking and reporting which are explained in Chapter 07 - Blocking In Farm Town

To Reply to the message:

Click on Reply.

Click inside the white box and type your message.

When you are done writing your message, to send the message click on Send at the bottom of the box and your message will be sent to them.

Why not?

In fact, internal messaging lets you communicate with farmers who are not online. You can visit their farms and leave a message by using the "Send Message" option on the neighbour bar or from your "buddy list". This is how you can send a message to people rather than using the reply option detailed above.

You can simply click on an avatar and select "Send Message" from the menu that appears.

How do I send Messages?

There are several ways to send a message to a farmer in Farm Town:

Clicking on a Neighbour in your Neighbours bar at the bottom of the game screen which opens a menu. Scroll down and click on Send Message to XXX
When looking through Neighbours Co-operative Quests you can click on the Envelope icon to the LEFT side of their profile picture at the bottom of the co-op Quest window.
Clicking on the Notepad Icon in your Farmer Lists.
When Visiting a farmer, you can click on the on the Notepad icon (bottom left of your game screen).
Clicking on a farmers Avatar which shows the Avatar menu.
Scroll down and and click on Send Message to XXX.
Clicking on the Notepad icon when receiving a Farm Cash Reward in the Farm Pass Feature.

With All OF the message examples above, both of you can be offline or online in the game or one online and the other offline as these Sent messages go to the receivers In game Message box. The envelope at the top of the game screen.
Once you have typed your message in the Message box, click on Send.
The message will be sent to that farmer who will see it when they read their messages.

With Sale Offers you send or receive while online in the game:

You must both be online in the game.

To send a Message Click on the Notepad Icon before you send a Sale Offer and the notepad will be replaced with a box that you can type in:

If you are receiving a sale offer and you want to accept or re-negotiate the sale, click on the Notepad Icon before you accept or reject the offer. The message will be sent when you click on the green check mark. Click on either the green check mark to accept the offer or red x to decline it, your message will be sent.

When these types of messages are received they do not go to your inbox, they show up on the game screen instead.

Examples:

If the farmer has not sent a message and just clicked the red X to reject the offer, you will see this type of message instead:

They may have accidentally ignored/blocked you in-game which would prevent this.

Ask them to verify that you are not in their list of blocked users in Farm Town.

There are several ways to unblock a user.
You need to be logged into your account on Facebook to do this:

Method 1:

If you have ignored/blocked someone you can click on this link to be taken to your blocked user list:
https://apps.facebook.com/farmtown/s.../blockedusers/
Look for the profile picture of the user you want to unblock.
Then click on Unblock User to the right.

Method 2:

Click on the Account tab at the top of the game screen
Then click on Blocked Users.

A Blocked users profile picture will be showing, no names will show.

To unblock a user click on Unblock User to the right of the profile picture you want to unblock.

Method 2:

Click on the message envelope at the top of your game screen

you will see this icon is showing at the top left of the message list.
Click on the Undo Ignore icon and it will show you a pop up asking if you want to modify your ignored user list.
Click on the green check mark and that will also take you to your list of blocked users.
To unblock a user click on Unblock User to the right of the profile picture you want to unblock.

Once a user has been removed from this list, you will be able to send messages and see each other in the game again.

YES you can now do this in the new version as Unity supports it.

During the flash days, Adobe (which developed and distributed Flash support for games had blocked access to the keyboard in full screen mode for security reasons.

Unity which we use now allows you to chat and send messages in full screen mode.

The official announcements for Facebook are made on the Facebook site and official announcements from Farm Town are made here in the forums.

These messages are hoaxes and aren't true.

Please do NOT send such a message when you get one. It will achieve nothing, by sending these on it simply slows down the game - there will be no rewards sent like this from Farm Town or Facebook via the private messaging system on Farm Town.

Highlighting to copy/Paste text in Farm Town:

WebGL provides very limited support for copy and paste so we had to implement it from scratch.
If the Copy/Paste/Cut menu options using right click do not work at some point, you can try highlighting the text to then try using the keyboard shortcuts to copy paste instead:

Windows users:
CTRL+C (Copy)

CTRL+X (Cut)

CTRL+V (Paste)

Mac Users:
Command (or Cmd) ⌘-C (Copy)

Command (or Cmd) ⌘-X (Cut)

Command (or Cmd) ⌘-V (Paste)
